Cabilao Island, Bohol: Your Guide to a Budget-Friendly Island Escape

Cabilao Island, Bohol: Your Guide to a Budget-Friendly Island Escape

I’ll be honest—I had never heard of Cabilao Island before moving to Bohol. Not once. But after living here for a while, I started wondering where I could escape the typical tourist trail. Traveling doesn’t have to be expensive if you’re up for exploring more natural, less-commercialized spots.

So, I set off on what was supposed to be a typical day of wandering. Detouring to Cabilao Island was never on my original plan, but as fate would have it, I decided to take the 2-hour drive to the port that leads to this remote gem. And let me tell you, Cabilao was everything I didn’t know I needed! Want to know why?

Escape the Hustle and Bustle

Cabilao Island is tiny, nestled in the municipality of Loon, Bohol. It’s one of those places where time seems to slow down. Forget the crowded beaches and noisy cities—here, you can escape all that. There’s not much to do on Cabilao besides soak in the serenity, but that's exactly the appeal. The island is renowned for its amazing dive spots, making it a hidden haven for divers and snorkelers alike. Even if you're not into diving, just snorkelling around the crystal-clear waters is an unforgettable experience.

Dive into a Vibrant Underwater World

The underwater world here is a treasure trove of vibrant marine life. I’ve snorkelled in a lot of places, but the marine life here feels almost surreal. The corals are untouched, the fish are abundant, and the water is so clear, it’s like swimming in an aquarium. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or just enjoy a good snorkel, Cabilao’s waters will leave you in awe.

Fireflies and Magical Nights

I’ve seen fireflies in movies, but nothing could prepare me for the magical experience of witnessing them in person. This was my very first time seeing fireflies up close, and it felt like something out of a fairy tale. The island is so dark at night—no streetlights, no neon signs—that it’s perfect for stargazing. And when you look up, you see a sky full of stars, while the fireflies light up the trees. It’s an experience that made me feel like I’d stepped into another world. It’s peaceful and surreal—so peaceful, in fact, that I started daydreaming about moving to the island.

Perfect for Water Lovers

Being a water lover, I was absolutely in heaven. The sea here is incredible. I could easily spend my days swimming, diving, or just floating in the warm waters. It’s a place where you can truly disconnect and enjoy the beauty of nature. If you love the ocean as much as I do, Cabilao is one of those rare spots that will keep calling you back.

How to get there?

via motorcycle - bangka (local boat)

LOCATION

From Panglao, it’s just an hour’s drive to Sandingan Port. From there, you’ll catch a local boat (bangka) that’ll take you to the island.

Here's the cool part: when you board the boat, you can tell the crew where you want to be dropped off. If you’re staying at Polaris Dive Resort (which I highly recommend!), you can get dropped off directly at the resort for PHP 1,000 one-way, regardless of how many people are in your group. It’s a convenient option if you want to skip the hassle.

Alternatively, if you prefer to be dropped off at the front of the island, it only costs PHP 240 one-way, but you’ll have to ride a motorcycle (habal-habal) from the Cabilao Port to your resort for about PHP 100 per person.

via jeep - bangka (local boat)

Head to Cogon Bus Terminal in Tagbilaran City, the central transportation hub for Bohol. Here, you can find jeepneys that travel to various parts of the island, including the route to Sandingan Port in Loon.

Where to Stay?

POLARIS BEACH & DIVE RESORT

If you're looking for the ultimate island getaway without breaking the bank, Polaris Dive Resort is the place to be! I stayed there for 2 days and 1 night, and I can honestly say it’s the perfect mix of fun and relaxation.

Even though the resort is on a remote island, there's never a dull moment. You can swim in the pool, play giant chess, or just kick back on the sunbathing chairs with a view of the sunset. Plus, the beach is just a few steps away, and there’s a restaurant and dive shop if you’re feeling adventurous.

ROOMS

And here’s the best part—for just PHP 1900 a night, I got my own private villa! Yep, you heard that right. For the price of a regular hotel room, I had the whole FAN-ROOM to myself. (Aircon’s available too, if you prefer.) The room had a comfy queen bed, a private bathroom, two fans, a wardrobe, and a balcony where I actually saw a bunch of fireflies lighting up the night. Magical!

Still second-guessing your trip? Just go for it – it's totally worth it!
