Backpacking Vietnam: Starting Your Journey in Hanoi

VIETNAM TRAVEL BLOG: Hanoi,Vietnam

Xin chào! Planning your first backpacking adventure through Vietnam? I’m here to guide you through everything you need to know—from how to get there to essential tips and more.

If you’re new here, hello! I’m Ross, a 21-year-old travel enthusiast from Cebu, Philippines. I dropped out of school to pursue my passions and haven’t looked back since.

In this blog, you will find:
-Immigration/Visas
-How to get there
-Our route from North to South
-Packing tips to make your journey smoother
-Important things to know about Vietnam, Activities, Cafe/Restaurant recommendations
-Where we stayed.

IMMIGRATION/VISA:

First things first, let's talk about visas. As a Filipino, I can travel to Vietnam without a visa for up to 21 days. However, since we're backpacking from North to South for almost a month, we needed to apply for a visa extension. Important tip: make sure to book your visa extension a week or more before your arrival.

Where to Get Your Visa:

There are many websites offering visa services, but after thorough research and price comparisons, we found a local contact on Reddit. I know it sounds unusual, but she came highly recommended by many. So, we gave it a shot.

Requirements:

- Passport details (photo)
- Formal photo (white background)
- Email
- Tickets (arrival and departure times)
- Payment methods (PayPal, Wise, Revolut, Western Union, bank transfer)

John got approved within a week, but I was initially denied due to an "inappropriate clothing" issue. I was wearing a full-sleeve collared shirt, so it was clearly a system error. We expedited the process, paid an extra fee, and I got approved on our day of arrival in Vietnam. Since I had 21 days visa-free, I wasn't too worried and could wait for the approval while already in Vietnam.

Immigration:

The immigration process was smooth. They didn't ask about John and just checked our past international flights together.

How to Get There:

We booked our flights via Cebu Pacific:
- Cebu > Manila > Hanoi

For both of our tickets:
- PHP 17,473.84 (one-way ticket)
- PHP 26,120.52 (return ticket)

Total: PHP 43,592.36

The flight from NAIA (Ninoy Aquino International Airport) to Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi took around 4 hours.

NORTH > SOUTH ROUTE

LETS PACK!

Are you curious about what I pack for a month-long backpacking trip through Vietnam? Many of my followers, especially those planning their first backpacking adventure, often ask me for packing tips and advice on saving space.

First things first: The Backpack.

If you're planning to backpack from north to south Vietnam (or vice versa), I highly recommend opting for a backpack over a suitcase, especially if you're traveling in July or August. I use a 40+5 liter backpack that I bought at the Ayala Metro Department Store for around PHP 3,000. It came with a free rain cover and a breathable mesh back, and I swear, it's the most comfortable backpack I've ever owned.

Carry-on/Day Bag.
You’ll need a day bag for all your essentials like your laptop, phone, wallet, power bank, or anything valuable and battery-powered, as batteries are not allowed in checked luggage. I use a small Blue Camp waterproof bag, also from Ayala Metro, and later bought a bigger Kipling bag during the trip because we planned to do some shopping towards the end.

Travel Organizers (Mesh).
These are a game-changer for organizing your clothes. I bought a set of 6 mesh organizers from Facebook Marketplace, and they’re perfect for separating your tops, underwear, swimsuits, and other items. If you have a 45-liter backpack like mine, one set is enough. For larger backpacks, like a 70-liter, you might need two sets.

Vacuum Sealer Bags + Automatic Machine.

These are incredibly useful for maximizing space in your bag. I pack my clothes in the organizers first, then seal them in the vacuum bags. The difference is night and day! I regret only bringing two large sealers, as I couldn’t find any more in Vietnam. If you’re planning to do some shopping, make sure to bring extra bags. The vacuum machine is lightweight and can be packed in either your checked or carry-on luggage. Just remember, if you have a battery-operated machine, don’t put it in your checked bag.

Bathroom & Makeup Bag.

Having a dedicated bag for your bathroom essentials and makeup is super helpful for staying organized. It makes packing and unpacking quick and easy whenever you need something.

Packing List

Here's my list if you're interested! This is just based on my personal preferences. We visited Vietnam during the rainy-hot season, and we ended up regretting not bringing a few things. So, I wanted to share my recommendations with you! Feel free to Add!

Helpful Tips for Traveling in Vietnam

These tips are based on my personal experiences in Vietnam.
Feel free to do your own thorough research if you're unsure about anything.

  • Visa Requirements: Filipinos can enter Vietnam without a visa for up to 21 days. For stays longer than 21 days, you'll need to apply for a visa extension.
  • SIM Cards: You can buy SIM cards at the airport or in stores around the city. Viettel is a popular eSIM option, but if you prefer a physical SIM, local options like Vinaphone offer 6GB per day (1month) for around 300k VND.
  • Transportation: Be cautious with local drivers, as some may try to scam tourists. It's safer to book a Grab ride.
  • Egg Coffee: This delicious treat is usually served hot, but you can ask for ice if you prefer it cold.
  • Dog Meat Alert: The word "cho" on a menu indicates that the restaurant serves dog meat. Keep an eye out for this before ordering.
  • Aggressive Vendors: Street vendors can be persistent. If you're not interested in buying, it's best to avoid eye contact and interaction to avoid pressure.
  • Ice in Drinks: Drinks are typically served without ice unless you specifically request it.
  • Booking Activities: As much as possible avoid booking activities online. Local offices often offer better prices or even upgrades. It is a very hassle-free booking. We had a diy once and it was really stressful. But if you prefer DIY, go gurl, you rock.
  • Bank Cards: If you're using a BDO bank card, be aware that the conversion rates might not be favorable. SeAbank is a no no for me. Go for Agribank.
  • Weekend Street Closures: Central roads in Hanoi are closed every weekend, creating a lively and fun atmosphere.
  • City Safety: Hanoi is a bustling city, but it's generally safe for travelers.
  • Crossing Streets: Traffic can be overwhelming, but don’t hesitate when crossing. The locals are skilled drivers and know how to navigate around pedestrians.
  • Language Barrier: Not many locals speak English fluently, so keep your Google Translate app handy.
  • Familiar Comforts: If you're missing home, you can find a Jollibee in Hanoi!
  • Temple Etiquette: Bring your own scarf to cover your shoulders when visiting temples. While some, like Ngoc Son Temple, provide cover-ups, others may not. It's also a good idea to wear long skirts or pants.
  • Business Hours: Shops and cafes in the city open early and close late, so you'll have plenty of time to explore.
