Discovering Dumaguete: A Dive-Lover's Paradise
Dumaguete, a charming city in Negros Oriental, Philippines, is often referred to as the "City of Gentle People." Known for its friendly and hospitable residents, Dumaguete is also home to Silliman University, one of the oldest American-established universities in Asia. But beyond its academic reputation, Dumaguete is gaining recognition as a must-visit destination for travelers, especially those who have a passion for diving.
I never imagined I’d find myself in Dumaguete. It seemed like just another quiet province in the Philippines, with little to offer beyond the usual. However, in 2023, my boyfriend and I decided to take a trip, and it was his idea to explore Dumaguete, specifically for its renowned dive sites. This trip was different; it wasn’t about rushing from one tourist spot to another but about enjoying a relaxed getaway filled with unique experiences. Here’s a glimpse into our Dumaguete adventure.

Diving Adventures
Exploring Beyond the Sea
After our diving excursions, we visited some of Dumaguete’s natural wonders. A short drive from the city led us to Pulang Bato Falls, nestled atop a mountain near the sulfur vents. The entrance fee of 100 pesos per person granted us access to three stunning waterfalls—one large and two smaller ones. The large falls, accessible via a picturesque wooden bridge, are a perfect spot for that Instagram-worthy shot. The smaller falls, more secluded and just a few steps away, offered a peaceful retreat where we could even enjoy a refreshing skinny dip.
Where to Eat
Our culinary journey in Dumaguete was as delightful as our dives. While the hotel offered a variety of food and drinks, we ventured out to sample the local cuisine.
Fin Bar: Here, we indulged in sisig, a sizzling pork dish that’s a must-try in the Philippines. Fin Bar is also known for its extensive drinks menu, making it a great spot for a relaxed evening out.
Ceazar Place: This beach resort surprised us with its generous portions of delicious food, perfect for sharing. The beachfront setting added to the overall dining experience.
Tierra Alta Lighthouse: This unique spot features a large lighthouse, a café, and even a glass bridge. The serene environment made it an ideal place to unwind after a day of exploring.
A Memorable Encounter: Feeding the Monkeys
On our way to the sulfur vents, we discovered a monkey feeding area. Here, a kind local has taken it upon himself to care for these monkeys, as there has been no government initiative to protect them. Visitors are encouraged to make donations, which are used to buy food—coconuts and bananas—for the monkeys. It was a heartwarming experience to see the bond between the local caretaker and these playful creatures.

✨ Travel to Dumaguete City
First, take a fastcraft or ferry from Cebu to Dumaguete City. Companies like OceanJet and SuperCat operate this route, with a journey time of around 3-4 hours. Check schedules and book your tickets in advance.
✨ Arriving in Dumaguete
Once you arrive at Dumaguete Port, you have a few options to reach Zamboanguita:
a. Taxi or Tricycle
Take a taxi or tricycle (motorcycle with a sidecar) to Mahi-Mahi Resort. Just provide the driver with the resort's address.
b. Rental Car
For more flexibility, rent a car in Dumaguete City and drive to Zamboanguita, allowing you to explore the area at your own pace.
